Audience members enter into a field of sculpted matter ringed by speakers emitting sounds too low for humans to hear. Though they vibrate under our threshold of audibility, this choir of subwoofers causes waveforms that ripple through and sonify the material space. Aircraft cables, tensioned web-like across the 150-foot performance space, double as infrastructure and instrument when bowed like mammoth double basses. Two singers snake side-by-side amidst the audience, shouting a warning that sounds like a whisper in a language no one can understand. The piece has a palpable sense of urgency and yet it’s eerily still, as if the timescales are off, as if some future frantic state reaches us only in slow motion. Commissioned by the New York Philharmonic for its 2018 opening gala, Filament occupied a unique position on that season’s roster, offering the first note conducted on the first concert of the first season under the artistic direction of maestro Jaap Van Zweden. The work is scored for orchestra, three amplified soloists (bassoon, trumpet, and double bass) and fifteen moving voices. The soloists perform from pedestals triangulated across the stage and audience while the singers move throughout the hall, projecting their voices through custom 3-D printed megaphones that both amplify and directionally focus each vector of sound. The goal of these bodies in the space is threefold: 1) to democratize proximity and spread access to the intimacy of performance throughout the hall, 2) to create a dynamic spatialization of sound whose angles and arrays shift around the audience in real time, and 3) to activate a theater of the social – toying with the codes of access and intrusion that bind the orchestral ritual. An ornithologist lays dying and hallucinates his way through his repertoire of knowledge. His end of life care nurse harbors dreams of being an horse racing jockey as she tends to his ailing body. Meanwhile, the ornithologist’s wife, desperate to avoid the reality of the situation, spends all her time in the bath, hiding. BADrum is a dance theater work exploring traumatic memory, voyeurism, privacy and the social codes of a decaying domestic space. Fragments accumulate - BADrum wonders how memory is kept alive; what carries through from before, how the traces live in our bodies and what ails us in an empty room. Inspired by the poetry of Marie Howe and William Carlos Williams; writings on PTSD by Bessel van der Kolk, the films of Roy Andersson; the Icarus myth; ornithology and object theory. Commissioned by the New York Philharmonic for its 2018 opening gala, Filament occupied a unique position on that season’s roster, offering the first note conducted on the first concert of the first season under the artistic direction of maestro Jaap Van Zweden. The work is scored for orchestra, three amplified soloists (bassoon, trumpet, and double bass) and fifteen moving voices. The soloists perform from pedestals triangulated across the stage and audience while the singers move throughout the hall, projecting their voices through custom 3-D printed megaphones that both amplify and directionally focus each vector of sound. The goal of these bodies in the space is threefold: 1) to democratize proximity and spread access to the intimacy of performance throughout the hall, 2) to create a dynamic spatialization of sound whose angles and arrays shift around the audience in real time, and 3) to activate a theater of the social – toying with the codes of access and intrusion that bind the orchestral ritual.
